The Echo

Minister for Social protection Joan Burton visited Liberties Recycling Training in Bluebell recently to present certificates to trainees who have completed a variety of FETAC courses. Liberties Recycling in Bluebell Industrial Estate recycles used clothing and is a sponsored by the (DSP) Department of Social Protection as a Community Employment rehabilitation project for those affected by drugs and alcohol misuse.

Minister Burton said: “Well done to you all for your hard work, determination and dedication in achieving your goals and obtaining FETAC qualifications. “Training and personal development offers a chance for personal success, a sense of satisfaction, greater independence and in many cases, employment”.

Established in the Liberties in 1999, the project moved to Bluebell six years ago and supports methadone users to get back on track through a combination of practical work experience and certified training courses.

Manager Lorretta Nwafor believes the project provides an important outlet for the 64 people it employs. He said: “We are the only place in the Republic of Ireland that sorts, grades and packs recycled clothes here. Most other companies collect it and ship it off to other countries, you don’t know where it will end up.

“Minister Burton was right in that she said there are not many families out there who have not been affected by drug and alcohol abuse. We are unique group in that we are one of the few places that employ rehabilitating drug addicts. “By working and doing FECTAC courses, they can get their life back on track. As an independent charity, all moneys that is generated goes back into the project.

Participants received certificates in communications, computer literacy, computer applications, forklift training and project’s in-house rehabilitation programme. Over the past five years, it has placed 59 people in jobs and 14 into further education.
